Wyoming Disabled Hunter Permit Application

Wyoming Game and Fish issues a Disabled Hunter Permit at no charge to hunters who meet a disability definition in Commission Chapter 35. Disabled veterans with a 70% service-connected rating qualify with VA documentation; everyone else needs a clinician to complete the medical section. The permit also lets another person apply for a Disabled Hunter Companion Permit to help in the field.

Who completes it

The hunter completes the personal section and swears to being disabled; a parent signs for minors. Unless the hunter applies as a disabled veteran, a licensed medical doctor, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, optometrist or ophthalmologist checks the qualifying conditions, marks permanent or temporary, and signs with name, address and phone.

Submitting and payment

How to submit it
Permits are issued at Wyoming Game and Fish regional offices or headquarters in Cheyenne, or the application can be mailed in. Allow 15 business days from mailing.
Who pays
The department's information sheet states there is no charge for the permit, and none is set for the clinician's certification.

Good to know

  • Qualifying conditions: needing a mobility device to walk at all times, severe lung disease, AHA Class III or IV cardiac limits, inability to hold or shoot a firearm or bow, or 20/200 vision.
  • Lung disease qualifies at an FEV1 below 35% of predicted or arterial oxygen tension below 55 mm Hg on room air at rest.
  • The clinician portion cannot be altered, and altered applications are not accepted. False statements by the clinician violate Commission Chapter 35.
  • The department lists its permanent permit to shoot from a vehicle as included in the Disabled Hunter Permit. Veterans need a VA decision letter from the past five years.

Frequently asked questions

Who can certify Wyoming's Disabled Hunter Permit?

A licensed medical doctor, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, optometrist or ophthalmologist. The clinician checks one or more of the five Chapter 35 conditions, marks whether it is permanent or temporary, and signs. Disabled veterans with a service-connected rating of at least 70% can use VA documentation instead.

What does the Wyoming Disabled Hunter Companion Permit do?

Once a hunter has a Disabled Hunter Permit, another person can apply for a companion permit. According to the department's information sheet, the companion may help the disabled hunter dispatch or retrieve an animal the hunter has wounded or killed. The companion uses a separate application.
