Washington WDFW Special Use Permit: Hunt from Vehicle

Washington's Department of Fish and Wildlife issues Special Use Permits under WAC 220-200-170 to hunters with a permanent inoperable disability who cannot get in and out of a motorized vehicle without help each time. The four-page packet has the applicant's statements on page 1 and the clinician's certification on pages 2 to 4. Each permit is customized case by case, and there are no temporary permits.

Who completes it

The applicant completes page 1, including yes/no statements about how they board and exit vehicles. A licensed MD, ARNP or PA with intimate knowledge of the disability completes pages 2 to 4, initialing every answer, and signs with address, phone, NPI number and title.

Submitting and payment

How to submit it
The application and any supporting documentation are mailed or faxed to WDFW Licensing in Olympia. Allow 4 to 6 weeks; incomplete applications are returned.
Who pays
The packet lists no fee for the permit or for the clinician's certification.

Good to know

  • The applicant must already hold WDFW Disability Status in good standing; the separate Hunter/Fisher Disability Status Application comes first.
  • Permanent inoperable means not treatable or correctable: all surgeries, treatments and devices are exhausted, or treatment poses undue risk. Correctable impairments do not qualify.
  • The clinician may attach supporting documentation, testing protocols or SOAP reports; incomplete, vague or illegible statements are returned.
  • Conditions relating only to the applicant's comfort level are not acceptable criteria, and the clinician certifies under penalty of perjury (RCW 9A.72.030).

How this list is checked

A form is listed only after its name and number were confirmed on the issuing agency’s or insurer’s own website, or in the form itself. Each entry links to that source. The list was last checked in October 2026. Forms and their requirements change without notice, so check the official page for the current version before you complete one.

Frequently asked questions

Who can certify a WDFW Special Use Permit application?

A licensed MD, ARNP or PA with intimate knowledge of the applicant's disability and physical impairment. The clinician must answer and initial each question, then provide a signature, address, phone, NPI number and title, all of which are mandatory. Missing items get the application returned.

Is there a temporary Special Use Permit in Washington?

No. State law restricts the permit to people with permanent inoperable disabilities, and the form states there are no temporary permits. The disability must be untreatable or uncorrectable, and the applicant must be unable to board and exit a vehicle without assistance every time.
