VIA Rail Request to Travel With a Support Person

Passengers whose disability means they need help between departure and arrival can have a support person travel free with them on VIA Rail. The request pairs the passenger's consent with a medical certificate confirming the help needed: eating, medication or washroom use, seat transfers, orientation or communication, or physical help in an emergency. Help with luggage or boarding alone does not qualify.

Who completes it

The passenger or legal representative completes and signs Section A, confirming what the support person will do. The attending physician or an authorized health care professional, such as a psychiatrist, psychologist or nurse practitioner, completes the Section B medical certificate; VIA's accessibility page also lists audiologists and optometrists.

Submitting and payment

How to submit it
Send the completed request to the VIA Rail Customer Centre by email, fax or mail at least 48 hours before the trip. VIA then confirms the approval by email or phone.
Who pays
The passenger is responsible for the cost of the Section B medical certificate.

Good to know

  • If the patient only needs help with luggage, boarding or disembarking, VIA will not accept the request, because it provides those services free of charge.
  • For a permanent limitation, VIA keeps the approval for five years from the signature date, so the passenger need not resubmit documents for each trip.
  • The passenger confirms the support person can assist during an evacuation without needing help themselves; otherwise VIA may deny boarding on later trips.
  • As an alternative to the form, VIA's accessibility page says passengers may show, for each trip, a valid card from a recognized association or institution for persons with disabilities.

How this list is checked

A form is listed only after its name and number were confirmed on the issuing agency’s or insurer’s own website, or in the form itself. Each entry links to that source. The list was last checked in October 2026. Forms change without notice, so download the current version from the official page before you fill it in.

Frequently asked questions

Who can complete VIA Rail's support person medical certificate?

The attending physician or an authorized health care professional. The form names psychiatrists, psychologists and nurse practitioners, and VIA's accessibility page also lists audiologists and optometrists. You certify you are authorized by your professional association in your province and country of practice and give your licence number.

What needs qualify for a support person on VIA Rail?

Help after departure and before arrival with at least one of: eating meals, taking medication or using the washroom; transferring to and from a seat; orientation or communication; or physical assistance in an emergency, including evacuation. Luggage or boarding help alone does not qualify.

Does the support person pay a fare?

No. Once VIA validates the completed request, it confirms by email or phone that a support person can accompany the passenger on future trips at no charge. The passenger pays only for the medical certificate, and must submit a new certificate if their health changes significantly.
