Massachusetts Medical Marijuana Patient Certification

Massachusetts patients enter the Medical Use of Marijuana Program through an electronic certification from a registered Certifying Healthcare Provider. In the Cannabis Control Commission's provider portal, the provider certifies that the patient has an active debilitating medical condition and that the benefits likely outweigh the risks, then sets the certification's duration, from 15 days to one year, and the 60-day supply.

Who completes it

A registered Certifying Healthcare Provider, meaning a Massachusetts-licensed physician, certified nurse practitioner or physician assistant, completes the whole certification and attests to a bona fide relationship, a clinical visit, a PMP review and risk education.

Submitting and payment

How to submit it
Execute it with Certify in the MassCIP provider portal; with Initial Access, the patient can buy a 14-day supply while the registration card is processed.

Good to know

  • The default supply is 10 ounces per 60 days, which the certifying provider may change on the certification.
  • Since the November 2024 reforms, initial certification visits may take place by telehealth.
  • Minors need two providers, one a board-certified pediatrician or pediatric subspecialist, for a life-limiting illness, or a benefits-outweigh-risks finding with written parental consent.
  • Listed conditions include cancer, glaucoma, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C, ALS, Crohn's, Parkinson's and MS, plus other debilitating conditions the provider determines in writing.
