Missouri Medical Marijuana Physician/NP Certification

Missouri patients apply for a medical marijuana patient license with an electronic certification from a physician or nurse practitioner. From an approved account in the Division of Cannabis Regulation's secure registry, the certifier attests that the patient has a qualifying condition, and the patient then files a new or renewal application from their own account. Patients needing more than six ounces per month need an additional certification.

Who completes it

A Missouri-licensed MD or DO in good standing, or a nurse practitioner recognized by the State Board of Nursing as an APRN with a Missouri or compact RN license and national certification, completes the whole certification.

Submitting and payment

How to submit it
Submit it electronically from your approved account in the DHSS registry; the patient must submit their application within 30 days of the certifier's signature date.

Good to know

  • Before certifying, examine the patient, review records, history, current medications and drug allergies, and discuss risks, contraindications and risks to fetuses and breastfeeding infants.
  • For a non-emancipated minor, first obtain written consent from a custodial parent or legal guardian who is also the primary caregiver.
  • Certifier accounts are verified and approved by DHSS under 19 CSR 100-1.050, and nurse practitioners were added by Amendment 3 (2022).
  • Conditions under Article XIV include cancer, epilepsy, glaucoma, intractable migraines, PTSD and other psychiatric disorders, terminal illness and conditions in the certifier's professional judgment.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Missouri patient have to apply after certification?

The certification must be submitted with the patient's new or renewal application within 30 days of the certifier's signature date on the electronic form. The patient files the application from their own registry account after the certifier submits the certification.

Can Missouri nurse practitioners certify medical marijuana patients?

Yes. Since Amendment 3 (2022), nurse practitioners can certify if they hold a current Missouri or compact RN license, maintain national certification in a population focus and are recognized by the Missouri State Board of Nursing as APRNs. Like physicians, they need an approved registry account.

Can a Missouri patient get more than six ounces per month?

Yes, with an additional certification for the higher amount. DHSS requires patients who need more than six ounces per month to obtain one additional certification, submitted through the same electronic registry by a physician or nurse practitioner.
