Virginia Medical Cannabis Written Certification

Virginia practitioners certify patients for medical cannabis digitally through the Cannabis Control Authority's CCA Portal. The certification records that the patient has a condition or disease that will benefit from cannabis products, along with identifying details and proof of Virginia residency; the patient gets an electronic or printed copy, and the dispensary scans its QR code. Separate patient registration is no longer required.

Who completes it

A Virginia-licensed MD or DO, physician assistant, or APRN licensed by the Boards of Medicine and Nursing, with a CCA Portal account, completes the whole certification. For minors and vulnerable adults, it also includes the parent or guardian and any registered agent.

Submitting and payment

How to submit it
Issue the certification in the CCA Portal; the patient can view it in their own account, or you can give them an electronic or physical copy to show at a licensed pharmaceutical processor or dispensary.

Good to know

  • There is no qualifying-condition list: any condition or disease the practitioner judges will benefit from cannabis products can be certified.
  • A certification is valid for up to one year, and the practitioner sets the period within that limit.
  • Professional details entered at portal enrollment are verified against Virginia's License Lookup; the CCA's Getting Started Guide walks through account setup.
  • Training is optional: the CCA links paid courses with CME credit, but practitioners must have enough education and training to exercise professional judgment when certifying.
