Mississippi Medical Cannabis Practitioner Certification

Mississippi patients need an electronic written certification from an MSDH-registered practitioner before applying for a medical cannabis identification card. The practitioner certifies that the patient has a debilitating medical condition and submits the certification in the MSDH licensing portal; the patient then selects it under View Available Certifications when applying, and MSDH issues the card.

Who completes it

An MSDH-registered MD, DO, nurse practitioner, physician assistant or optometrist completes the whole certification; for patients under 18, only an MD or DO may certify.

Submitting and payment

How to submit it
Submit it in the MSDH licensing portal after an in-person visit; the date of birth and Social Security number entered must match the patient's portal account or it will not appear for them.
Who pays
MSDH does not set what practitioners charge for certification visits.

Good to know

  • Practitioners register annually, completing 8 hours of MSDH-approved continuing education initially and 5 hours for each renewal.
  • A certification lasts one year unless the practitioner sets a shorter period; recertification may be by telehealth if the practitioner saw the patient in person before.
  • Conditions include cancer, Parkinson's, ALS, MS, Crohn's, UC, PTSD, glaucoma, HIV/AIDS, sickle cell, autism, Alzheimer's, spinal cord injury and conditions causing cachexia, chronic pain, severe nausea or seizures.
  • Any Mississippi resident may petition MSDH to add a qualifying condition, and MSDH decides within 60 days.

Frequently asked questions

Can Mississippi medical cannabis certifications be done by telehealth?

Only renewals. An initial certification can be issued only after an in-person visit. For recertification, a registered practitioner who previously evaluated the patient in person may conduct the assessment via telehealth.

Why can't a Mississippi patient see the certification in the portal?

If the date of birth or Social Security number the practitioner entered does not match the patient's portal account, the certification will not appear under View Available Certifications. The details on the practitioner's certification need to match the patient's own account.

Who can certify minors for medical cannabis in Mississippi?

Only a physician, MD or DO, may issue a certification for a patient under 18. Nurse practitioners, physician assistants and optometrists registered with MSDH may certify adults. All practitioners must register with MSDH annually, with initial and renewal continuing education.
