West Virginia Medical Cannabis Physician Certification

West Virginia patients need an online-electronic certification from a registered physician confirming a serious medical condition before they can apply for a medical cannabis ID card. The physician certifies through the Office of Medical Cannabis portal, specifying the form and allotment of medical cannabis, and the patient uploads the certification with the online card application. Invalid electronic certifications are a common reason applications are rejected.

Who completes it

A physician with a valid, unexpired West Virginia medical license who completed the required four-hour course and registered with the Office of Medical Cannabis completes the whole certification. The patient completes the card application; for patients under 18, a caregiver application is also required.

Submitting and payment

How to submit it
Register and certify through the MyComplia portal, which is online only with no paper option; the patient then uploads the certification with the online card application and fee.
Who pays
The patient pays the card application fee, and patients with income below 200% of the federal poverty level can request a waiver.

Good to know

  • Renewal needs an annual appointment with a registered physician, in person or online, and may be submitted no earlier than 60 days before the card expires.

Frequently asked questions

What training do West Virginia physicians need to certify patients?

A four-hour course from TheAnswerPage, tailored to West Virginia and awarding 5 CME/CE credits, completed before registering. Physicians must also hold a valid, unexpired, unrevoked, unsuspended West Virginia license and show by training or expertise that they are qualified to treat the serious medical conditions involved.

Why was my patient's West Virginia card application rejected?

The Office of Medical Cannabis lists an invalid online-electronic physician certification as a common reason for rejection. Rejected applications are corrected rather than restarted: the patient fixes the existing application instead of creating a new one. Minor patients cannot be approved until a caregiver application has been created and is ready for submission.
