Michigan PR9409: Hunt From Standing Vehicle Permit

Michigan hunters who are permanently unable to walk in a hunting situation because of paralysis, amputation, disease or injury can apply for a permit to hunt from a standing vehicle or a personal mobility assistive device (PMAD). The applicant completes Section 1, and a licensed physician or physical or occupational therapist completes the evaluation and certification in Sections 2 through 4.

Who completes it

A licensed physician or licensed physical or occupational therapist completes Sections 2 to 4 and signs. A therapist may certify through a coordination assessment; only a physician may certify amputation, paraplegia, spinal cord injury, wheelchair restriction or another diagnosed disability.

Good to know

  • The coordination assessment checks whether muscles work together to walk, for incoordination from conditions such as Parkinson's disease, cerebral palsy, hemiparesis, head trauma, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy or ALS.
  • Under Other, the physician notes in general terms how the permanent disability prevents walking; any such physician-diagnosed disability is sufficient grounds for the permit.
  • The disability must be permanent. Temporary conditions can qualify for the disability bow permit (PR9134) but not for this permit.
  • Fraudulent certification of permanent disability can lead to a complaint to the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs for disciplinary review under MCL 333.16231.

Frequently asked questions

What does Michigan's hunt from a standing vehicle permit allow?

The holder may hunt and shoot from a parked motor vehicle, ORV or PMAD during the open season, with a valid license for that game. It also allows taking a deer of either sex under any valid deer license, subject to other rules such as buck limits and antler-point restrictions.

Who can certify a hunter for PR9409?

A licensed physician, or a licensed physical or occupational therapist through a coordination assessment. Only a physician may certify the hunter as an amputee with loss of a lower limb, a paraplegic, permanently non-ambulatory after spinal cord injury, wheelchair restricted, or otherwise permanently unable to walk.
