South Dakota Shoot from a Motor Vehicle Permit

South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks lets a qualifying disabled hunter shoot game animals from a stationary motor vehicle under SDCL 41-8-37. A licensed physician completes Part C, checking one or more of nine walking, cardiac, lung or neuromuscular conditions. GFP says the permit is meant only for hunters whose condition makes walking afield impossible or causes severe pain or physical hardship.

Who completes it

The hunter completes Parts A and B and signs, giving the physician permission to supply information. A licensed physician completes Part C on the back: the qualifying conditions, permanent or temporary status with onset and expected recovery dates, and a signed statement under penalty of perjury.

Submitting and payment

How to submit it
The application can be filed paperless through Go Outdoors SD under specialty licenses, mailed to GFP in Fort Pierre, or processed at a GFP regional office. Approved permits are emailed as an attachment.
Who pays
The application lists no fee for the permit or for the physician's Part C statement.

Good to know

  • Qualifying conditions include loss of use of a leg, wheelchair use, portable oxygen, inability to walk 300 feet without rest, a neuromuscular disorder, Class III or IV cardiac disease, or severe lung disease.
  • Lung disease qualifies at an FEV1 under one liter or arterial oxygen tension under 60 mm Hg on room air at rest.
  • Permanent permits run four years and renew without physician certification. Temporary permits last up to 12 months, and a Conservation Officer can approve one for a visible injury.
  • Holders may not shoot from a state or federal highway or across a public road, and need written landowner permission to hunt big game from a road right-of-way.

Frequently asked questions

What conditions qualify for South Dakota's shoot from a vehicle permit?

Part C lists nine: lost legs or use of them, wheelchair use, needing a person or device to walk, portable oxygen, inability to walk 300 feet without assistance or rest, a neuromuscular disorder, Class III or Class IV cardiac disease, and severe lung disease. The form states a disability in itself is not enough.

Does a South Dakota shoot from a vehicle permit renewal need a physician?

No, for four-year permit renewals. The form says physician certification is not required for four-year renewals, which may be filed 60 days before expiration. New permits and temporary permits, which cannot exceed 12 months, need Part C completed by a licensed physician.
