BC Ferries Accessible Fare ID Card Application (AFI)

BC residents with a severe physical or mental impairment expected to last more than two years can get discounted BC Ferries fares, for themselves and one personal attendant, under the provincial Social Reimbursement Program. They apply for an Accessible Fare Identification card and prove the disability with PWD or CPP Disability documents. A physician or nurse practitioner certifies only when neither is available.

Who completes it

The applicant or guardian completes the applicant details, photo and declaration. A physician or nurse practitioner with access to the applicant's medical records signs and stamps Section C, but only when the applicant cannot provide PWD or CPP Disability proof.

Submitting and payment

How to submit it
The applicant mails the completed application, the proof or certification and a photo to BC Ferries. Processing takes 2 to 3 weeks.

Good to know

  • Section C certifies a disability that impedes normal daily activities, such as meals, mobility or managing personal affairs, and is expected to continue for more than two years.
  • The card is valid for two years and is renewed by submitting a new completed application with one of the three accepted forms of proof.
  • Applications are subject to review by government auditors, and BC Ferries or provincial auditors may contact the certifying physician or nurse practitioner to confirm eligibility.
  • The discount covers the cardholder and one personal attendant aged 12 or older, and discrepancies must be resolved at the terminal before sailing because discounts cannot be applied afterward.

The list was last checked in October 2026. Forms change without notice, so download the current version from the official page before you fill it in.

Frequently asked questions

When does a doctor need to sign the BC Ferries AFI application?

Only when the applicant cannot provide proof of Persons with Disabilities designation, such as a Confirmation of Assistance, or official documentation of current CPP Disability benefits. Section C is then completed by a physician or nurse practitioner; the form cannot be processed without one of the three.

What does the physician or nurse practitioner certify?

That they have access to the applicant's medical records and that the applicant has a disability impeding normal daily activities, such as preparing and eating meals, mobility or managing personal affairs, expected to continue for more than two years. They sign, stamp and print their name and address.

How long does a BC Ferries AFI card take and last?

BC Ferries asks applicants to allow 2 to 3 weeks for processing. The card is valid for two years and can be renewed by submitting a completed application form, and it must be unexpired and shown to the ticket agent at the terminal.
