WCB Nova Scotia CSSP Surgical Referral Form

Physicians use this referral to send a worker with a WCB Nova Scotia claim to the Centralized Surgical Services Program (CSSP), which uses available public system capacity for faster non-urgent surgical consults and procedures. It covers areas such as hernias, orthopaedic and carpal tunnel surgery, spinal consults, ear procedures and plastic surgery. WCB's program page now routes all referrals through the OceanMD eReferral platform.

Who completes it

The referring physician completes the whole form, including client, injury and medical history details, and signs the certification with their WCB physician number. The worker does not complete a section.

Submitting and payment

How to submit it
WCB's CSSP page says all referrals are made through the OceanMD online eReferral platform; the PDF version asks for the WCB claim number on every additional page and attachment.
Who pays
Physicians bill visits for WCB patients through MSI with WCB selected as the payee, and the referral form lists no separate fee code.

Good to know

  • Do not use CSSP for clinically urgent, emergent or time-sensitive injuries: refer those to the surgeon on call or the emergency department, since a CSSP consult may take 6 to 8 weeks or more.
  • Eye consults and surgeries and spinal surgeries are out of scope; if a service is not in scope and the pathway is unclear, contact the worker's WCB case worker.
  • Use CSSP when the consult is directly related to the workplace injury and the worker is in time loss, on transitional duties, or at risk of time loss from surgical wait times.
  • The form asks for mechanism of injury, clinical findings, investigations with copies of reports, past surgical and medical history, medications, allergies, treatments tried, and any surgeon previously seen for the same area.

How this list is checked

A form is listed only after its name and number were confirmed on the issuing agency’s or insurer’s own website, or in the form itself. Each entry links to that source. The list was last checked in October 2026. Forms change without notice, so download the current version from the official page before you fill it in.

Frequently asked questions

How do I refer a WCB Nova Scotia patient to CSSP?

WCB's Centralized Surgical Services Program page says all referrals are made through the OceanMD online eReferral platform, with onboarding available for new users. The referral captures the worker's claim and health card numbers, diagnosis, mechanism of injury, body area and side, clinical findings, investigations and medical history, plus your signature and WCB physician number.

How long does a CSSP consult take?

The referral form warns that a CSSP consult may take 6 to 8 weeks or more. For that reason it must not be used for clinically urgent, emergent or time-sensitive injuries, which should go directly to the surgeon on call or the emergency department rather than through the program.

Which surgeries are not covered by CSSP?

WCB lists eye consults and surgeries and spinal surgeries as outside the program, although spinal consults are included. In-scope services include general surgery such as hernia repair, orthopaedic and carpal tunnel surgery, ear procedures and plastic surgery. If you are unsure which pathway to use for an out-of-scope service, contact the patient's WCB case worker.
