IRCC IMM 5733: Pregnant Client, X-Ray Deferred

When a pregnant client chooses to defer the chest x-ray in an immigration medical examination, the panel physician records the deferral and gives the client written instructions. The rest of the IME is completed, and the health case is placed on hold until the post-partum chest x-ray is done. In eMedical, the system generates the deferral letter and an x-ray requisition for the client.

Who completes it

The panel physician completes the client details (UCI, IME and UMI numbers, photo) and names the designated radiology clinic, then gives the instructions and x-ray requisition to the client. The client is responsible for getting the x-ray as soon as possible after pregnancy.

Submitting and payment

How to submit it
In eMedical, the panel physician ticks pregnancy and submits the IME, which shows On hold pregnancy until the x-ray results arrive; on paper, the IME is sent only once the post-partum chest x-ray has been returned.

Good to know

  • A pregnant client may instead proceed with the chest x-ray using adequate pelvic lead shielding, in which case nothing changes in the IME process.
  • The client may send a copy of the IMM 5733 to the visa or migration office as proof that the IME has started and the x-ray was deferred because of pregnancy.
  • Upfront medical clients receive their proof of completion (information sheet or IMM 1017B UPFRONT) so they can apply before the post-partum x-ray.
  • The x-ray is required after pregnancy or as soon as the client's physician considers it clinically safe, and the radiologist reports the results to the panel physician.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to an immigration medical when a pregnant client defers the x-ray?

The panel physician completes every other part of the exam and the health case is put on hold. Migration officers see the status On hold pregnancy until the post-partum chest x-ray is done, after which the results go to IRCC for assessment by the Regional Medical Office.

Does a pregnant client have to defer the chest x-ray?

No, the choice is the client's. If she proceeds with the chest x-ray with adequate pelvic lead shielding, no changes apply; if she defers, the IMM 5733 process applies and the IME is finalized only after the post-partum x-ray results are available.
