Nevada OD-2 Lung Exam Form: Police & Firefighters

Under NRS 617.455, lung disease in Nevada police officers and firefighters is, in certain circumstances, conclusively presumed to arise from their work, but they must submit to physical examinations to qualify. The OD-2 records the lung portion of that exam: height, weight, blood pressure, whether overweight, chest X-ray, stethoscopic examination of the lungs and a spirometer test, each marked normal or abnormal.

Who completes it

The examining physician completes and signs the form, noting anything the officer or firefighter should discuss with a personal physician. The employee also signs.

Submitting and payment

How to submit it
The examiner gives a signed copy to the officer or firefighter, who signs and submits one copy to the employer or organization.

Good to know

  • Spirometry is conducted under the Social Security Administration rules for determining disability and blindness cited on the form, and it is optional for volunteer firefighters.
  • The examiner's line recommending that the person contact a personal physician about correcting specific findings is where follow-up items are flagged.
  • NAC chapter 617 sets how often these exams happen, their minimum requirements, and the employer's and employee's duties.
  • The exam series also includes OD-1 Medical History, OD-3 and OD-4 heart exams and OD-5 hearing, and OD-6 is a sample acknowledgment letter.

Frequently asked questions

Why do Nevada police and firefighters need the OD-2 lung exam?

Under NRS 617.455, lung diseases in police officers and firefighters, and in volunteer firefighters, are conclusively presumed under certain circumstances to have arisen out of their employment. To qualify for those benefits they must meet minimum employment requirements and submit to physical examinations, which NAC chapter 617 governs.

Is spirometry required on the OD-2?

The spirometer test is part of the exam but is marked optional for volunteer firefighters. When done, it follows the Social Security regulations titled Rules for Determining Disability and Blindness, as the form cites, and the result is recorded as normal or abnormal with details.

Who keeps the signed OD-2?

The examiner signs and gives a copy to the officer or firefighter. The form tells the employee to sign one copy and submit it to the employer or organization, which keeps the exam on record for the lung disease presumption.
