Nova Scotia IPTA Form 10: Renewal of CTO

Before a Nova Scotia community treatment order expires, the attending psychiatrist examines the patient and uses this form to renew it for another 180 days. The psychiatrist identifies the original Form 9 by date, numbers the renewal, and confirms the order has demonstrated efficacy and that the person still meets all five criteria from the original order.

Who completes it

The attending psychiatrist completes and signs the renewal in front of a subscribing witness, who signs and prints their name. Under the Act, the patient's substitute decision-maker must consent to the renewal.

Submitting and payment

How to submit it
The renewal is filed with both the designated Nova Scotia Health or IWK office managing IPTA health records and the provincial IPTA Review Board administration. The form's instructions recommend renewing at least 72 hours before the expiry date.

Good to know

  • Section 52 allows renewal for 180 days at any time before expiry, with no limit on the number of renewals, if the order has shown efficacy and the substitute decision-maker consents.
  • On the first renewal and every second renewal after that, the person is deemed to have applied to the Review Board unless an application was made in the preceding 30 days.
  • The renewing psychiatrist must notify the Review Board in writing immediately when a renewal creates a deemed application, under subsection 58(4).
  • When an order is renewed, the patient and substitute decision-maker must be informed in writing of the reasons, the right to counsel and the other subsection 47(5) rights.

How this list is checked

A form is listed only after its name and number were confirmed on the issuing agency’s or insurer’s own website, or in the form itself. Each entry links to that source. The list was last checked in October 2026. Forms and their requirements change without notice, so check the official page for the current version before you complete one.

Frequently asked questions

How often can a Nova Scotia CTO be renewed?

There is no limit. Section 52 allows a psychiatrist to renew a community treatment order for 180 days at any time before it expires, provided the order has demonstrated efficacy, the subsection 47(3) criteria continue to exist and the substitute decision-maker consents to the renewal.

Does a CTO renewal lead to a Review Board hearing?

Subsection 58(3) deems the person to have applied to the Review Board when the order is renewed and at every second renewal after that, unless an application was made in the preceding 30 days. The renewing psychiatrist notifies the Review Board in writing immediately.

What date counts as the original order?

The form's instructions say the date of the original community treatment order is the date Form 9 was signed. The renewal records that date, the current expiry date, the renewal number and the new expiry 180 days after signing.
