FAA SSRI Neuropsychological Evaluation Specs

Pilots and FAA air traffic control specialists seeking special issuance or special consideration while treated with an SSRI need a neuropsychological evaluation, because depression and the medication itself may affect cognition. This two-page specification, updated 01/29/2020, defines who may test, which records to provide and what the report and score data must contain.

Who completes it

A licensed clinical psychologist who is board certified or board eligible in clinical neuropsychology performs the evaluation and writes the report. The airman or ATCS supplies prior psychiatric and substance-related treatment records and has the complete FAA file sent to the HIMS AME.

Submitting and payment

How to submit it
The neuropsychologist's report, copies of all computer score reports and a score summary sheet go to the FAA with the HIMS AME's package.

Good to know

  • The FAA renamed its SSRI Protocol the Antidepressant Protocol after adding bupropion in 2023 and more medications in April 2024; SSRI references now cover all conditionally approved antidepressants.
  • Eligibility requires at least 3 continuous months of stability on a stable dose of a single approved medication, with no psychosis, suicidal ideation, electroconvulsive therapy or multiple concurrent SSRIs.
  • Re-evaluation testing after authorization is set in the special issuance letter and may be limited to CogScreen-AE or expanded to other tests.
  • Required tests are listed only in the secure FAA Neuropsychology Testing Specifications portal, and the FAA will not review findings without score reports using pilot norms where available.

How this list is checked

Frequently asked questions

Who can perform the FAA neuropsychological evaluation for SSRI use?

A licensed clinical psychologist who is board certified or board eligible in clinical neuropsychology. Board eligible means having the education, training and experience to sit for certification with the American Board of Clinical Neuropsychology, the American Board of Professional Neuropsychology or the American Board of Pediatric Neuropsychology.

Can an AME issue a medical certificate to a pilot on an SSRI?

No. Under the FAA's Antidepressant Protocol the authorization decision is made case by case and the AME may not issue. A pilot who meets the criteria and wants to keep taking the medication is referred to a HIMS AME, who assembles the package that includes this evaluation.

What happens if the pilot stops the SSRI instead?

The AME defers and notes it on the application. To reapply for regular issuance, the pilot must be off the medication for at least 60 days, with a favorable report from the treating physician showing stable mood and no aeromedically significant side effects.
