FAA ADHD Standard Track Neuropsych Report Requirements

On the FAA's ADHD standard track, a HIMS neuropsychologist evaluates the pilot or air traffic control specialist in person, administers the FAA test battery and writes a report. This two-page specification, updated 09/27/2023, lists what that report must cover, including drug screen results, a diagnostic statement and a final determination on neurocognitive concerns.

Who completes it

A HIMS neuropsychologist performs the in-person evaluation and testing within 90 days of the AME exam and writes the report. The individual supplies the ADHD Document Checklist items and arranges the urine drug screens.

Submitting and payment

How to submit it
The neuropsychologist sends the full report, records reviewed, computer score reports and a score summary sheet to the AME of record for upload into AMCS, or as the FAA letter specifies.

Good to know

  • The standard track applies with ADHD symptoms, treatment, instability or medication in the past four years, any other psychiatric history, or when the fast track cannot reach a clear determination.
  • ADHD medication must be stopped at least 90 days before testing, and urine tests for amphetamines and methylphenidate, ordered separately, must be done within 24 hours after testing.
  • The report must integrate the actual laboratory drug screen results; testing data cannot be used without the supporting urinalysis.
  • Testing specifications sit on an FAA secure portal for HIMS neuropsychologists. Pilot norms must be used when available; otherwise the comparison group must be named.

Frequently asked questions

Who can write the FAA ADHD standard track report?

Only a HIMS neuropsychologist, who must evaluate and test the individual in person. The FAA publishes a list of Aviation Neuropsychologists and Psychologists, and the testing specifications are on a secure FAA portal that HIMS neuropsychologists request access to.

How do the ADHD fast track and standard track reports differ?

The fast track uses a doctoral-level psychologist or neuropsychologist, a records review and an interview that may be on screen. The standard track requires a HIMS neuropsychologist, in-person neuropsychological testing, urine drug screens and score summaries. Both evaluations must be within 90 days of the AME exam.

What must the standard track report conclude?

Either no concerns or abnormalities, with functioning within normal limits and any initial-battery abnormalities explained, or concerns found, describing the nature and severity of any neurocognitive deficit, its potential impact on flight safety and any applicable diagnosis or comorbid condition.
