Frequently asked questions

Who can sign the Nebraska handicapped license plate application?

The Medical Certification must be completed by a licensed physician, physician assistant or nurse practitioner, who gives a name or company, phone, address, title and signature. They certify that the applicant has one of the six listed conditions and meets Nebraska's criteria for plates or a permanent permit.

How often are Nebraska handicapped plates renewed?

Every six years, when Nebraska issues license plates of a new design. Renewal requires reapplying through the Department of Motor Vehicles. A permanent parking permit expires separately, at the end of the holder's birth month in the sixth year after issuance.

Can a Nebraska plate application include a parking permit?

Yes. The optional section requests a permanent handicapped parking permit with the plates, mailed with the approval letter. Proof of identity must be included. Temporary permits, replacements and new permanent permits without plates use the separate permit application.
