Virginia APS Online Reporting Portal (DARS)

Virginia Adult Protective Services takes reports of suspected abuse, neglect or exploitation of adults aged 60 or older and incapacitated adults aged 18 to 59. Health care providers are among the mandated reporters under Code of Virginia 63.2-1606. The DARS online portal is for reports that are not emergencies; it sends each report to the local department of social services, which investigates.

Who completes it

The reporter, whether a mandated reporter such as a physician or nurse or any concerned person, completes the whole online report. Reports can be anonymous.

Submitting and payment

How to submit it
File the report in the APS Online Reporting Portal at any time, contact the local department of social services directly, or call the 24/7 APS hotline. Emergencies go to 911.

Good to know

  • After filing online, reporters can check the status of a submitted report through a separate link on the DARS File an APS Report page.
  • All APS investigations are carried out by the local department of social services, so online reports and reports made at the local office reach the same investigators.
  • DARS posts written instructions for filing an online report, a list of abuse, neglect and exploitation indicators, and FAQs for portal reporters.
  • VDSS offers APS mandated reporter training and a tutorial for the online portal alongside the CPS equivalents.

Adults aged 60 or older, and adults aged 18 to 59 who are incapacitated. DARS invites a report whenever someone thinks, or even has a feeling, that such an adult is being abused, neglected or exploited. Reports can be anonymous, and all APS investigations are done by local social services offices.

Is the Virginia APS online portal for emergencies?

No. DARS says the portal is for reports that are not emergencies. Call 911 if the adult is in danger. The APS hotline takes reports 24 hours a day, and local social services offices take reports directly during business hours.
