Good to know

  • Every complication or residual, such as skin, heart, peripheral nerve or mental health findings, needs its own additional questionnaire.
  • Active beriberi findings include neuropathy with absent knee or ankle jerks, foot drop or calf and thigh atrophy, cardiomegaly, and congestive heart failure, anasarca or Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome.
  • Residuals of past beriberi are recorded separately in item 3C from active disease in item 3B.
  • Other vitamin deficiencies and their residuals are described in item 3D when they are not pellagra, avitaminosis or beriberi.

Frequently asked questions

What pellagra findings does the VA nutritional deficiencies DBQ list?

Item 3A covers pellagra and avitaminosis: a confirmed diagnosis, nonspecific symptoms such as decreased appetite, weight loss, abdominal discomfort, weakness, poor concentration and irritability, plus stomatitis, achlorhydria, diarrhea, symmetrical dermatitis, mental symptoms and impaired bodily vigor, with the most severe findings listed separately.

Does Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome go on this form?

It is listed as a finding of active beriberi in item 3B, together with congestive heart failure and anasarca. Mental health and nerve residuals from the deficiency also need the matching questionnaires, such as Mental Disorders or Peripheral Nerves.
