Mississippi Vulnerable Person Abuse Online Report

Mississippi's Vulnerable Persons Act requires anyone who knows or suspects that a vulnerable person is being abused, neglected or exploited to report it, and physicians and other medical professionals must report immediately. MDHS Adult Protective Services takes these reports through a 'Report Online' form or the Vulnerable Person Abuse Hotline, for adults whose ability to perform normal daily activities is impaired.

Who completes it

The reporter completes the online report. Mandated reporters, including physicians and other medical or mental health professionals, must give their name, address and phone number, which Centralized Intake keeps confidential.

Submitting and payment

How to submit it
Use the MDHS 'Report Adult Abuse Online' form (WellSky intake) or call the Vulnerable Person Abuse Hotline. Abuse in licensed facilities is reported to the State Department of Health or the Attorney General's Medicaid Fraud Control Unit instead.
Who pays
MDHS lists no fee for reporting.

Good to know

  • Once a regional manager accepts a report, the investigation begins within 48 hours if the person is in immediate danger, or within 72 hours if not.
  • APS reports findings to the Attorney General's Vulnerable Adults Unit, and files with the district attorney and Attorney General when there is reasonable cause to believe a crime occurred.
  • Include the person's impairments in daily living, caregiver details, whether the person is self-neglecting, and dangers to visiting APS staff, such as firearms or drugs.
  • Residents or patients of a care facility count as vulnerable persons regardless of age, while anyone under 18 is reported to MDCPS.

How this list is checked

A form is listed only after its name and number were confirmed on the issuing agency’s or insurer’s own website, or in the form itself. Each entry links to that source. The list was last checked in October 2026. Forms and their requirements change without notice, so check the official page for the current version before you complete one.

Frequently asked questions

Who investigates abuse in Mississippi nursing homes?

Reports involving licensed facilities, such as nursing homes and personal care homes, and unlicensed personal care homes with four or more unrelated residents go to the Mississippi State Department of Health or the Attorney General's Medicaid Fraud Control Unit. APS handles private home settings, including unlicensed care homes.

Can Mississippi APS make a patient accept services?

No. APS connects the person to services and supports, but it cannot require a mentally competent adult to accept protective services. MDHS does not conduct criminal investigations; the Vulnerable Adults Unit investigates, and the Attorney General or local district attorney prosecutes.
