Mississippi MDCPS Online Child Abuse Report

Mississippi Department of Child Protection Services takes reports of suspected child abuse, neglect, juvenile human trafficking and child fatalities online or through its 24-hour hotline. Physicians, nurses and psychologists are mandated reporters under Miss. Code 43-21-353, which requires an immediate oral report followed by a written report as soon as possible. Allegations are forwarded to MDCPS staff for a response.

Good to know

  • A child means anyone under 18, or a youth 18 or older in MDCPS custody; other vulnerable adults are reported to MDHS Adult Protective Services.
  • Intake asks about the child's current location and safety, injuries, prior maltreatment, the family's primary language, Native American heritage and dangers to visiting staff.
  • Good-faith reporters are immune from civil and criminal liability, while knowingly failing to report can bring a fine, up to a year in jail, or both.
  • Reports also cover infants affected by substance abuse, and the reporter's identity is confidential under Miss. Code 43-21-259.

Frequently asked questions

Do Mississippi reporters have to give their name?

MDCPS does not require a reporter to identify themselves as a condition of reporting, but it encourages leaving contact information, because insufficient information or no way to reach the reporter can limit its ability to intervene. Reporter identity is confidential under Miss. Code 43-21-259.

What happens after an online report to MDCPS?

You receive a unique confirmation code, which MDCPS advises keeping. Intake assesses the information and forwards allegations of abuse or neglect to the corresponding MDCPS staff for a response, and may refer the family to child abuse prevention services.

Do I need to be certain before reporting?

No. MDCPS says you don't need certainty: describe what you know and your concerns. Intake specialists will ask whether the child is in imminent danger, where the child is and whether they are being cared for safely, and which relatives could help keep the child safe.
