DC CFSA Mandated Reporter Portal: Child Abuse Report

The District of Columbia's Child and Family Services Agency (CFSA) runs an online portal where mandated reporters can file a non-emergency report of suspected child abuse or neglect. A clinician meets it after seeing signs of maltreatment in a child under 18 in the District. Urgent concerns go to CFSA's hotline, which takes reports by phone 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Who completes it

The mandated reporter completes the whole online report after signing in to the CFSA portal through the Mandated Reporters login. DC's mandated reporters include physicians, nurses (LPNs and RNs), dentists, chiropractors, psychologists, mental health professionals, medical examiners and anyone caring for or treating patients.

Submitting and payment

How to submit it
Sign in to the CFSA portal as a mandated reporter and submit the report online when the situation is not an emergency. Anything urgent goes to CFSA's 24/7 child abuse and neglect hotline by phone.
Who pays
CFSA lists no fee or payment for the report, which DC law requires of mandated reporters.

Good to know

  • CFSA asks for the child's name, address, age and gender, who cares for the child, whether other children live in the home, and the nature and extent of the abuse or neglect.
  • Include any previous abuse or neglect you know about, plus anything else that may help CFSA, since the same questions are asked on the hotline.
  • The portal is for non-emergency incidents only. CFSA's hotline covers children up to age 18 in DC and takes reports at all hours.
  • CFSA offers free online mandated reporter training covering legal obligations, types and signs of abuse and neglect, and when and how to report.

Frequently asked questions

Can a DC clinician report child abuse online instead of calling?

Yes, for non-emergency incidents. CFSA's portal lets DC mandated reporters submit an online report of suspected child abuse or neglect. When a child may be in danger now, use CFSA's hotline, which takes reports 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and treats calls as confidential.

Who is a mandated reporter in Washington, DC?

CFSA lists physicians, nurses (LPNs and RNs), dentists, chiropractors, psychologists, mental health professionals, medical examiners and people caring for or treating patients, along with teachers, school officials, child care workers, social service workers, law enforcement officers, coaches and others. All must report when they know or suspect a child is being abused or neglected.

What information does CFSA need in a report?

Have the child's name, address, age and gender, the name of whoever cares for the child, and whether other children live in the home. Describe the nature and extent of the abuse or neglect as you know it, including any earlier incidents, and add any other information that may help CFSA respond.
