• New coding direction for DAD and NACRS The new coding direction supports surveillance and public reporting for patients with a diagnosis of Gulf War Illness. When a diagnosis of Gulf War Illness or Gulf War syndrome is documented by a physician/primary care provider, Assign U52.0 Gulf War Illness, mandatory, regardless of significance (diagnosis type M, 1, 3, W, X, Y or main or other problem). Notes Chronic multisymptom illness, medically unexplained illness or medically unexplained chronic multisymptom illness must be documented by a physician/primary care provider and explicitly attributed to service in the Gulf War to be classified to U52.0. Do not assign U52.0 Gulf War Illness in the absence of explicit physician documentation linking the condition to Gulf War service, or when attribution is inferred from history, symptoms or veteran status alone. Do not apply diagnosis type (2) to U52.0 Gulf War Illness.
